Many of today’s wells are experiencing flow assurance problems that create costly flow blockages in oil production. Paraffin is a heavy organic produced by petroleum fluids. These paraffin deposits exist in crude oil in various quantities and forms. During the oil production process,paraffin will precipitate or crystallize into solids when the temperature or pressure drops. The flow of oil will decrease as a result of blockages in the walls of the tubulars and the reservoir surfaces when these heavy solids prevent its designed flow. These heavy organ- ics can cause a restriction throughout many areas.

Paraffin has plagued oil and gas operators since the first wells were drilled. Paraffin is a waxy material found in the majority of the world’s crude oil. When the crude oil is in the formation and kept at formation temperatures (>180 degrees F) it stays as a liquid and does not pose much problem. However when the crude oil temperature cools, the paraffin starts to solidify. This solidification can be compared to candle wax hardening after it cools. Once paraffin starts to harden or fall out of suspension, it must be treated or considerable production decreases will result. The current methods used for this process are damaging to the well and have significant life reduction to the formation. By slipstreaming our proprietary chemical products down hole we have been able to keep the paraffin in solution and increase the life of the well all while greatly enhancing the wells production.

By reducing maintenance and production costs in oil wells with paraffin issues, our technology allows producers/operators to lower their lifting costs. Lower lifting costs mean greater profits at the well head. Skye has many applications, with paraffin affecting the industry in multiple areas from downhole production to final transportation of the crude to the refinery. Skye’s paraffin treatment process can be effective in lowering maintenance costs associated with the trans- portation and pipelining of crude oil worldwide. Once the crude oil temperature falls below that of the formation temperature it was produced from, the paraffin begins to fall out of suspension (harden). As this hardening process takes place the flow of the crude is slowed down and in more serious cases the pipeline can become completely blocked. Once a section of pipeline has become restricted to oil flow,it must be taken off line and cleaned.The clean- ing process can be very costly to the operator as the pipeline is not transporting any crude while it is shut down. Skye’s process allows continued operation of the system without any interruptions to the flow of crude oil.
